Nine years—maybe more, but that’s about how long it’s been since I heard ‘We Could Get Together.’ Recorded and re-recorded, the song sat.
Matt sours when his own music comes up: a critical ear turns in on itself, too. Something is off, something is unsatisfying—it “just doesn’t match what’s in my head, what I want to be doing.” That match needs to be near perfect, though the mismatch might be very good.
Even with a match, Matt checks and rechecks—porches in Oklahoma, California and Washington have heard a hundred versions of each song. “What do you think?” “It’s great, when are you gonna record it?” “Probably never.”
What's the use in that?
It paid off, though. Nine years is what it took the song to sit right alongside the others. The harsh rock and roll vocals of the demo mellowed to a close two-part harmony, Bakersfield twang in the place of gritty, distorted guitar. Danny had to come up to Washington as well, barely acquainted, his musicianship allowing Matt to present the songs bare and unadorned.

They’re writing these parts for the first time; Danny picked it up quickly, the first few takes were played perfectly. Matt’s uncomfortable in his chair—hearing what he imagined fouled it. But he doesn’t want to say so. They reluctantly scrap it for something else.
Matt's yelling from his music room. Sounds like shit, apparently. The dog howling made it onto tape, and the lap steel needs a new pickup--no one here even played the lap steel until last week.
